General Information


It is officially known as the Republic of Turkey and Ankara is the capital. A larger part of Turkey is in Southwest Asia and another smaller part is in Southeast Europe. The Bosphorus, the Dardanelles and the Sea of Marmara, which connect the Black Sea with the Aegean Sea and connect Asia with Europe, are in its territory, making its position strategically influential in the Black Sea countries. It is bordered by Georgia, Iran, Armenia and Azerbaijan to the east; Iraq, Syria and the Mediterranean Sea, to the south, and maritime borders with Cyprus. It is bordered by the Aegean Sea, Greece, Bulgaria, the Black Sea and Russia to the west.

The total area of Turkey is approximately 783,562.35 km2, a large portion is in Anatolia, known as Asia Minor, approximately ninety-seven percent of Turkey’s total area. In addition, the remaining area is in Europe, which is three percent of its area. It is encircled by several seas including the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea, in addition, the Sea of Marmara is in the interior borders of the region between Asia and Europe.

Turkey's total population is approximately 79.8 million. It is made up of several different races, including the Turkish ethnicity, Kurds, Arabs, Circassians, Bulgarians, Bosniaks, Armenians and Greek ethnicity. There have been no statistics on the numbers of these races. The official language used is the Turkish language, written in Latin characters since 1928.
